Organic ice cream is defined by European rules on organic production and labelling, not by an assumed nutritional advantage.

For processed food sold as organic, at least 95% by weight of its agricultural ingredients must be organic. The remaining 5%, additives and processing aids are also subject to specific conditions.

What is organic ice cream?

The production process can be similar to conventional ice cream, but milk, eggs, sugar, fruit and other agricultural ingredients must meet the applicable requirements. The term “organic” depends on compliance and certification, not merely on using one or two organic ingredients.

On prepacked organic food produced in the European Union, the EU organic logo is accompanied by the control body code and an indication of where the agricultural raw materials were farmed.

Organic labelling does not automatically mean that an ice cream is more nutritious, lighter or suitable for particular dietary needs. Ingredients, allergens and nutrition information must be checked for the individual recipe or label.

For an ice-cream parlour, the key points are documented ingredient traceability and compliance with production, processing, storage and labelling rules.
